Yayoi Kusama's work is diverse, obsessive, full of mystery. I love it. Having seen this exhibition earlier in the summer at Madrid's Reina Sofia gallery, I am ridiculously excited that it will begin next month at Tate.

Card Designs

On a warm (er) day a little while ago I spent an afternoon at my local park in South London drawing people. I like that this sort of task means drawings must stay quick, simple and loose to adapt to the constantly moving subject matter.

The (loose) inspiration for the project came from drawings of Star Constellations. I often find I am a bit of a colour-phobe- so this will also be an opportunity to explore colour a little

Hobbs House Bakery

Last week I was commissioned by the lovely Hobbs House Bakery to screen print 250 of my navy Christmas cards for their xmas customer mailout.

I created 5 designs for the card, and each was hand printed- more photos of the final designs up soon.

Patty & Bun

Myself and good pal HOAGY spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon on Friday working on a collaborative project- creating a set of blackboards for the PATTY & BUN Pop up, a night of Burgers and Cocktails in West London.

Here are some pictures of our creations- I worked on some of the signage while Hoagy created a psychedelic chalkboard mural masterpiece, and we worked together on 35 mini chalkboards featuring burger-related quotes and quips.

I also designed the flyer for the event, seen at the bottom here.

Naturally I had to put up a picture of the Patty & Bun burger, it was ridiculously tasty.

PS I thoroughly recommend a peruse around Hoagy's website, his work is mysterious and magical, rather like him.

Tonight NOTHING BUT NAVY opening

The NOTHING BUT NAVY Christmas Pop Up in Stroud opens this evening. If you happen to be around Stroud tonight or any night until Christmas eve, go and have a peruse, the shop is crammed full of lovely things, all made with love in shades of Navy blue.

I am selling navy screen printed cards seen above, in packs of 3, each with a snippet of a different Christmas carol. There is also screen printed wrapping paper and some original screen prints. Sir Peter Cook is an iconic British architect, founder of Archigram and former director of the ICA.

I am involved in an exhibition along with 74 other illustrators to commemorate his birthday. Each illustrator was invited to create a portrait of Sir Peter, which all will be auctioned for the charity Architecture For Humanity. My contribution, which you can see above, is a screen print.

'75 Peters' is curated by the Adam and Eve Project in partnership with Sir Peter and begins on 26th October in Brisbane- details above. As you can see the line up for the show is fantastic with some brilliant illustrators: Mike Perry, Andrew Rae and Ian Wright among many many more involved.

Pan Tone

Earlier this year I was approached by the German musician Haushcka to create an image for his forthcoming album 'Pan Tone'. It was Released last month by Berlin record label Sonic Pieces: a label which focuses on releasing handmade and limited edition CDs and EPs.

The album is a musical collaboration between Haushcka, an experimental pianist and Hildur Guðnadóttir an Icelandic cellist, and was originally recorded when the duo performed in 2010 as part of Arctic Circle - Bubbly Blue and Green festival at Kings Place in London.

Each composition is named after a different Pantone colour, each a different colour of the sea, and so the design of the EP and illustration follow in this theme. I produced an illustration for the inlay using only two of the Pantone colours from the album, plus black. The image is inspired by the Leviathan sea monster myth.

There is a limited number of the EP and CDs, each embossed and numbered, hand bound and beautifully designed by Sonic Pieces.

Grey Magazine

Grey Magazine is an biannual fashion Magazine. It's 5th issue for AW11/12 is out now, and I was asked to create two illustrations to accompany a collection of poems by JM Parham themed around London, seen here above.

I will always love working for magazines like Grey- aside from it's design, it combines literature, fashion and illustration in such an innovative way.

I have posted some photos of the issue below just because I was so impressed with the quality of imagery featured. For me the stand-out features are a fantastic photographic story by Todd Hido about the New York public library, and Julie Verhoeven's contribution, both of which are artists I hugely admire.

Hello, I realise I haven't written anything on here for a long while. Summer is a strange old time I think, everything slightly grinds to a halt. Anyway I have been working on some nice projects over the past couple of months, including work for Grey Magazine, Hauschka and Berlin record label Sonic Pieces and currently working on some pieces for upcoming exhibitions.

I also went to Morocco on the train.

More of that to come soon. In the meantime, and on a totally unrelated subject here are some pictures of some really very nice shop fronts I took in France earlier in the summer.

Some favourite book covers from my collection. I have a large and ever growing collection of the Bibliothèque Verte Hachette children's books- I like the very idiosyncratic 1940s illustration and heavy typeface combination.
I think I'd like one day to have the Woodland Birds Penguin cover made into a wallpaper. The owl print is magnificent.

Nymphs and Dior!

Another collage from the Forest series, the ongoing project I've been working on. I've been doing some experiments using more colours, patterns and abstract shapes to create backgrounds.

In other news I went to the (extremely glamourous!) private view for the fantastic new exhibition Dior Illustrated: René Gruau and the Line of Beauty at Somerset House last week.

The show is a retrospective of the work of illustrator Gruau and features his collaborations with the fashion house throughout the decades, along with a selection of contemporary illustrators' homages to some of his pieces. Personally its the style, the movement and complete simplicity of Gruau's illustrations that I love, they perfectly compliment the Dior style. He is the king of fashion illustration!

The exhibition also features beautiful graphic design by Studio Frith. Wonderful stuff.

Wood Nymphs continued

Some more work in progress from a series inspired by tales of wood nymphs.

I have been thinking for a while now about the idea of forests/nymphs. A lot of folklore I read explores in various forms the female spirit, and its link to nature- the symbolism is obvious, but there is something in these different representations of 'women', nymphs, goddesses of natural elements that interest me.

I recently went with some friends on a wonderful winter trip to France, to stay in our friend's lovely little cottage, just outside the fishing town Barfleur. I took my Holga camera to try and capture the beautiful light - although it never looks as good as it does in real life.

I recently produced a series of 11 illustrations for the 3rd issue of the French magazine Paris,LA

I was asked to incorporate jewellery and accessories by various designers, such as Hermès and Lanvin into my collages. The full series will be up on my website soon, which I am in the process of giving a spring clean to. In the meantime here are a couple of the spreads.
