My work will be shown along with 130 others at this show, opening today at Brighton university. There is a great and eclectic mix of illustrators involved (all alumni of the fantastic Brighton university Illustration course) including Quentin Blake, George Hardie, Raymond Briggs, John Vernon Lord and more; I think definitely worth a trip to the seaside for.</div>

Some time ago, I was asked by the folks at Lazerian, a Manchester-based creative practice, to design a print for a project involving their mascot: a dog named Gerald. Along with 50 other artists and illustrators, I created a pattern to customise a limited edition Gerald, which will be sold as a kit and then is built to make a paper sculpture. <br />
<br />
The idea for the pattern I designed came from reading about the Canis Major 'Greater Dog' star constellation. The project interestingly came along while I was thinking a lot about patterns. I wanted this one to remain quite fragmented and dispersed, to emulate the randomness of a star constellation.<br />
<br />
The customised Gerald sculptures will soon be part of an exhibition, more on this soonRosie Robertshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00814097230123989735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2062546310371043156.post-70401266826383792962012-12-05T04:34:00.000-08:002012-12-05T04:45:09.575-08:00NAVY X OTHER<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
My sketchbook travels most places with me. It is quite a messy,
unstructured thing. Several pages have fallen out of my current one in fact.</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
Whilst my solutions are usually realised in
collage, I always work out initial thoughts in drawing and mark making. </div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Today I'm doing some more work for New York based magazine Grey - I realised I hadn't posted the work I did for their last issue, so here it is.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Grey is a magazine which combines Fashion, art and literature- it is divided quite obviously into a first section focused on fashion stories, photographically based, and then a moves into a literature section which is largely illustrated. This will be the third issue I have worked on- each new brief I find always gives something unique to explore.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Issue 6 I was asked to illustrate two essays, entirely different in their subject matter- The first (top image), <i>Lost and Found</i>, by Erin Sheehy, is a wonderful piece exploring the power of sound. In it she considers her own love of old Soul and R&B, and likens the act of listening to music to conjuring ghosts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second article <i>The President on the Rocks</i> by Aaron Ayscough, investigates certain US presidents' historical drinking habits. I particularly liked the visual of Thomas Jefferson and his love of Bordeaux.</div>

Here is a Badger-themed screen print I finished last week, for an exhibition opening on 21st June. LOVE THY BADGER features work by all sorts of great folk: Matthew The Horse and Neil Fox to name just a few. All donated to raise money for the Wildlife Trust against the recent Government Bill for a mass badger cull.</div>

</div>Continued development of two screen printed patterns. As mentioned before these are very much inspired by 1950s colours. I'm experimenting with combining simple shapes, created using roughly cut out paper, or thick stripes of ink with more detailed collage elements.Rosie Robertshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00814097230123989735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2062546310371043156.post-44755160622509280582012-02-19T11:02:00.001-08:002012-03-19T06:23:26.694-07:00Patterns 2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-feA1nqInwb4/T0EI69bVP3I/AAAAAAAAArI/uzTm-Heh8N0/s1600/IMG_0575.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-feA1nqInwb4/T0EI69bVP3I/AAAAAAAAArI/uzTm-Heh8N0/s400/IMG_0575.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nv06Y2GvyYs/T0EJY0DrqLI/AAAAAAAAArg/u2mlpWRjQwA/s1600/IMG_0581.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nv06Y2GvyYs/T0EJY0DrqLI/AAAAAAAAArg/u2mlpWRjQwA/s400/IMG_0581.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XrT_PWYTyEk/T0EJEVnTRyI/AAAAAAAAArQ/fv562xf3D6M/s1600/IMG_0576.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XrT_PWYTyEk/T0EJEVnTRyI/AAAAAAAAArQ/fv562xf3D6M/s400/IMG_0576.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NscCfrEEXwM/T0EIwAUl-nI/AAAAAAAAArA/GRviazuUzHY/s1600/IMG_0566.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NscCfrEEXwM/T0EIwAUl-nI/AAAAAAAAArA/GRviazuUzHY/s400/IMG_0566.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br />

</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span">I have recently been doing quite a lot of research into print and patterns. I find myself drawn to patterns which are fairly random and accidental. The pieces above I think are wonderful examples of 'accidental' patterns- though they perhaps were not intended to be so.</span><span class="Apple-style-span"><br style="text-indent: 0px !important;" /></span><span class="Apple-style-span">Alfred Wallis is one of my favourite painters for many reasons: the simple naivety of his pictures and the beautiful subdued colour palette he used. In these examples,the repetition of houses and fishing boats creates a beautiful, simple pattern.</span></span></div></div></div>Rosie Robertshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00814097230123989735noreply@blogger.com0
